top RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • Evolutionary biology
  • Molecular evolution and genomics

My research employs computer analyses of nucleotide and protein sequence data to address a range of evolutionary questions. I have thus studied the evolutionary history of a variety of organisms, ranging from sponges and echinoderms to protists, bacteria and viruses.

In recent years, most of my work has focused on the evolution of bacteria. Analyses of bacterial genomes provide insights into the mutational and selective forces shaping them; a particular interest is the evolution of multipartite genome in bacteria and its impact on bacterial diversification.

As a side interest, I got involved in the modelling of DNA electrophoresis in order to improve the whole genome two dimensional display method used in comparative genomics of bacteria. This study has been realized in collaboration with physicists at the University of Ottawa, Canada (Pr. Gary W. Slater group).
